Species Details

This hybrid orchid is a very rare native perennial of damp and rough grassy areas in marshes, fens, old quarries and industrial wasteland. It was discovered in 1973 at Grin Wood (SK0472) by R. Carr. It has been recorded at three other sites since, all recent: Cow Dale (SK0872), Peak Dale (SK0876) and Hartington Station (SK1561). It is the partly fertile hybrid of Common Spotted-orchid (XXD. fuchsii) and Northern Marsh-orchid (XXD. purpurella), so can occur in swarms that back-cross with its parents. Nationally it is a plant of upland Britain, with Derbyshire localities on the south-eastern margin of its distribution.
