Species Details

A rare native perennial of damp peaty areas in grasslands heaths bogs and marshes. It occurs throughout the northern half of Derbyshire [Upper Derwent SK1096; Goyt’s Clough SK0172 v.c.58; Blacka Moor SK2880; near Matlock SK36A]. In the southern half of the county there is an isolated occurrence at Muggington Bottoms (SK2843), and a 1945 record at Dale Abbey (SK4438). Our plant is subspecies Xxericetorum. It has a local name of Nightcaps, though this name appears to have been applied to the Common Spotted-orchid (XXD. fuchsii) as well (Grigson 1975).
