Species Details

Wild Carrot is an occasional native biennial of grassland waysides and waste places, on well-drained, often calcareous, soils. It is also widely grown as a vegetable in gardens. It is occasional throughout the eastern part of our area as near Caldwell (SK2618), Erewash Meadows (SK5033) and Beighton (SK4484). Elsewhere it is rare as at Parwich (SK1954) and Hollingworth (SK0097). Our wild plant is the subspecies Xxcarota but some records, particularly those from waste places, probably relate to escapes of the cultivated subspecies Xxsativus
