Species Details

This hybrid male fern is a very rare native perennial of damp acid soils in woods hedges and ditches scattered throughout the county. The sole recent record is from Roman Lakes (SJ9687). This probably represents an under-recording as when specifically looked for in the 1970s several sites were found (Stanton Moor SK2563, Shining Cliff Wood SK3352, Breward’s Carr SK3044 & Bottoms Wood SK2750). It is the hybrid of Common (XXD. filix-mas) and Scaly Male Fern (XXD. affinis). (I think that the recent records from the DWT are either computer errors or mis-idents.)
