Species Details

Rough Horsetail is a very rare native perennial of just one shaded streamside in the south of the county. It was first discovered, growing under hazel bushes, by A.Willmot in 1975 at its only site of Millington Green (SK2647). One clump of nearly 300 stems still survives today, with two additional smaller clumps discovered some 50m downstream in 2004. Previously it had only been recorded from Repton Rocks (SK3222) in the second half of the nineteenth century (Garneys, 1881), although Linton either discounted or overlooked this record as he pointed out that the species had still to be recorded in Derbyshire. It is nationally decreasing species.

This plant is in Category 4 of the local Red Data List, 2009.
