Species Details

Fennel is an anciently established perennial of waste ground and waysides, though some recent records probably refer to casual plants. It occurs occasionally through the eastern and southern parts of our area from Beighton (SK4384) and Cresswell (SK5273) in the north, through Ironville (SK4451), to Long Eaton (SK4832) and Westbrook Farm (SK2312) in the south. It has been, and is now, grown as a culinary herb in gardens. Our plant is subspecies Xxvulgare which is derived from the native plant of continental Europe.
