Species Details

Snowdrop is a newly established perennial of waysides grasslands and open woods that is also often planted in such situations as well as in churchyards and gardens. It is occasional throughout our area from near Whaley Bridge (SK08A v.c.58) and Hathersage (SK2380) in the north, to Neatherseal (SK2812) and Shardlow (SK4330) in the south. The earliest record is 1829 but it is often thought to have been established for much longer. At Middleton by Youlgreave Castle (SK1963) for example there is a local legend that it was planted with its building but this is certainly an exaggeration. However, it has been known for long enough to be represented in traditional Ashford Black Marble inlay work. It is a native of southern Europe.
