Species Details

Prickly Heath is a very rare established and evergreen shrub of open woods and shrubby areas on sandy soils. All recent records are from the central part of our area (Whitesprings SK2865 and Wirestone Plantation SK3263). Previous records come from a similar but slightly wider area (Farley Moor SK2961 and Dore SK2980). It is often a relic of garden and nursery plantings, and occasionally escapes, it is thought, via bird-sown seed (Preston et al. 2002). It naturally occurs in Chile.
