Gentianella uliginosa
Dune Gentian
Species Details
(Locally extinct) Dune Gentian has been recorded twice for our area; Miller’s Dale (SK17) for 1899, and Buxton (SK07) 1898. This latter record is supported by a well-labelled specimen in the National Museum of Wales, confirmed by H.Tingnong. These records had previously been considered erroneous by Lousley (1950) and Clapham (1969), no doubt because the other UK localities for the species are coastal dunes in western Britain. However it is regarded as valid in the wider European context as the plant is widespread in damp meadows across northern Europe e.g. Poland (pers. comm. T. Rich 2003)
This plant is in Category 6 of the local Red Data List, 2009.
