Species Details

Opposite-leaved Pondweed is a submerged native perennial of streams ponds and canals. There are no recent records. Previously it occurred widely but rarely throughout the southern and eastern parts of our area in clear, often fast-flowing waters. The latest records are from the Magnesian Limestone area at Pleasley (SK5164) and Markland Grips (SK5074) in the 1970s. There are also earlier sightings from New Stanton (SK4639) in 1969, and from Cromford (SK25) and Calke Abbey (SK32) both for 1903. This local loss is matched by a national decline since before 1930 due to the nutrient enrichment of waters (Preston XXet al. 2002).

This plant is in Category 2 of the local Red Data List, 2009.
