Species Details

Alder is a native tree of woods on wet soils, often forming pure woods in valley-bottoms, and of the edges of rivers lakes and fens. Nowadays it is also often planted in restoration and amenity schemes. It is very common throughout our area except for the White Peak. It often crops up in local place names such as Alder Carr, and its cones, known locally as Black Knobs, have been used to outline image borders in well dressing.
