Species Details

Elecampane is an anciently established perennial of waysides and riverbanks. It is recorded very rarely throughout our area from Hathersage (SK2281) and Shuttleworth (SK4772) in the north, through Youlgreave (SK2263), to Ticknall (SK3422) in the south. It is occasionally grown in gardens for medicinal use or ornamental value, and in the past has been cultivated on a small scale, as at Milltown in Ashover (Farey 1815). It is a native of western and central Asia.
