Species Details

Woad is a very rare casual biennial of waste and cultivated ground. There are only two recent records: as a garden weed at Kirk Langley (SK2938) and by a pathside Ilkeston (SK4742). These records probably originated from bird-seed or plants grown in gardens. There is a record from Willington (SK22) in 1903 and before this it was cultivated as a source of dye, for example around Beighton and Eckington in the early 19th century (Farey 1815). This cultivation probably accounts for early records in the wild around Matlock, Kirk Hallam and elsewhere (Farey 1815).
