Species Details

Blunt-flowered Rush is a very rare native perennial of fens and marshes, usually on calcareous soils, in the south and east of our area. There are no recent records and only a handful of previous ones. The latest are from Bradley Brook (SK2343) in 1980, near Pleasley (SK4863) in 1974 and near the Walls Whitwell (SK5078) in 1969. Earlier records are from Scropton (SK13) and Burton (SK22) both for 1903, and Scarcliffe Park Wood (SK57) in 1863. This local loss mirrors a national decline where it has been lost from many lowland sites in southern England due to drainage (Preston XXet al. 2002).

This plant is in Category 5a of the local Red Data List, 2009.
