Species Details

Sharp-leaved Fluellen is a very rare, native annual of arable land particularly on lighter soils. There are only two recently recorded sites: Moss Valley (SK3980) and West Hallam (SK4241), both in the eastern half of the county. This is also where most of the older records were, though they are scattered over a slightly wider area that ranges from Whitwell Wood (SK5278) to Calke (SK32). There are also a few old records in the west, such as Ladmanlow Tip (SK0471). Clapham (1969) noted that the species was decreasing and this appears to have continued to the present day, most probably due to the intensification of arable farming. The county is on the northern limit of its distribution in Britain as a native plant (Stace, 1997).

This plant is in Category 5a of the local Red Data List, 2009.
