Species Details

Wild Daffodil is an attractive native perennial of damp grasslands and woods, though some records are probably of escapes from cultivation. It is occasional in the Peak Fringe as at Derwentside Reserve (SK3255), Horsley Castle (SK3748) and Brackenfield Orchard (SK3658). Elsewhere it is very rare as at Taddington Wood (SK1670) and Long Wood (SK3780), and often under suspicion of having been planted as at Snelston Churchyard (SK1543). Previously it was more frequent, particularly in the south of our area as at Calke, Repton and Swarkestone (SK32) and Drakelow (SK21) all for 1903. These losses are no doubt due to the agricultural improvement of grasslands. It has a local name of Lent-lily (Grigson 1975).
