Species Details

Spiny Restharrow is a very rare native under-shrub of unimproved grasslands and rough ground, particularly on heavy soils. Reports of it are scattered throughout Derbyshire, from Dam Dale (SK1178) and Clowne (SK4875) in the north, through Ivy Bar Brook (SK2263) and Langwith Junction (SK5268), to the flood bank of the Trent at Cranfleet Farm (SK4931) in the south. Formerly more common, often as a disagreeable weed of pastures, it gained itself the local names of Hen-gorse and Fiend (Farey 1815).

This plant is in Category 5b of the local Red Data List, 2009.
