Species Details

This orchid is a very rare native perennial of unimproved grassland in the White Peak. There are only two recent confirmed records, neither of which have yet reappeared. It formerly grew throughout Derbyshire, except for the Dark Peak, with sites ranging from Ashwood Dale (SK07) and Troway (SK3980) in the north, to Repton (SK32) in the south. This contraction in range was due mostly to agricultural improvement. It disappeared from the county around 1975 when the last site at Weston Fields Farm, Chellaston (SK3929) was ploughed up. However in 2000 and 2001 it reappeared after almost 30 years absence when it was discovered at Rose End Meadows Nature Reserve (SK2956) by P. Robinson. A second location was reported in 2003 from Carsington Water (SK2452).

This plant is in Category 2 of the local Red Data List, 2009.
