Species Details

(Locally extinct) Royal Fern was a very rare native perennial of bogs and marshy woods. There are no recent records and only eight previous ones. Three of these probably represent planted records: Osmaston Ponds (SK24) in 1903, Brabyn’s Park (SJ9689) in 1984 & Beauchief Hall (SK3381) in 1970. The remaining records are for Castleton (SK18) 1903 in the north of the county, Darley Dale (SK26) 1903 in the centre and three from the south. These latter three are Brewards Carr (SK24), Shirley Wood (SK2042) and Hulland Carr (SK2645) all of which date from the late 19th century. The loss of this plant from our area was no doubt due to the activity of Victorian fern collectors.

This plant is in Category 4 of the local Red Data List, 2009.
