Species Details

Greater Butterfly-orchid is a very rare native perennial of woods and unimproved grasslands on calcareous or neutral soils. Its current distribution is the Dark Peak (Edale Valley SK1385) and the White Peak {Parsley Hay SK1463; Abney Clough SK2079}, plus the Peak Fringe (Alderwasley SK3253). Linton's Flora shows that was formerly scattered throughout the county, from Charlesworth Coombs (SK09) in the north, to Snelston Park (SK14) and Calke (SK32) in the south. It has shown a similar decline nationally due to the loss and coniferisation of woods (Preston et al. 2002).

This plant is in Category 2 of the local Red Data List, 2009.
