Species Details

Wild Pear is an anciently-established spiny shrub or small tree of hedges and abandoned cultivations. It is often used as the stock for cultivated pears and can survive the death of the graft. The sole recent record is from Stanton Lock (SK4838), and there are previous records from amongst other sites Snelston (SK1642) and near Ambergate (SK3551) both for 1969. It is probably under-recorded due to incomplete separation from Pear (XXP. communis). It is a native of central and southern Europe.
