Saponaria officinalis
Soapwort
Species Details
Soapwort is a rare native perennial of roadsides, waste ground and grassy areas. It grows scattered throughout our area though it is commoner in the eastern half (Monsal Trail SK2269, Lock Lane Ash Tip SK4831 & Renishaw SK4477). Some authorities doubt that it is native in Derbyshire (Clapham 1969) and yet others that it is even native in Britain (Stace 1997). They see it as a garden escape or throw out. It is certainly native in continental Europe.
