Species Details

Marsh Valerian is a rare native perennial of marshes fens and flushes. It grows scattered throughout the northern and central parts of our area. There are records from Gamesley (SK0093) and Ginny Springs (SK5278) in the north, through Hartington (SK1461) and Hopton Quarry (SK2656), to Anacre Hill Farm (SK1541) and Muggington Bottoms (SK2743) in the south. It was previously more frequent, and also occurred in the south of our area for example at Drakelow Reserve (SK2219) in 1973, and Repton Rocks (SK3221) in 1969. This local decline matches a national trend of decrease due to habitat degradation and loss (Preston XXet al. 2002).

This plant is in Category 5b of the local Red Data List, 2009.
