Species Details

Horned Pondweed is a very rare native aquatic of still and slowly-moving water bodies, where it grows as a submerged perennial. Current records are from the lowland southern (Sudbury Hall Lake SK1531) and eastern parts (Cromford Canal SK3551 and Chesterfield fishing lake SK3868) of the county. Whilst previous records were far more widely dispersed over the county from Gill’s Park (SK32) in the south to Miller’s Dale (SK1772) in the White Peak and Chapel-en-le-Frith (SK0681) in the Dark Peak. It has also declined nationally probably due to drainage and more intensive ditch maintenance (Preston et al. 2002).

This plant is in Category 5b of the local Red Data List, 2009.
