Species Details

The Butterfly-bush is a newly established shrub of waste ground, walls, scrub and waysides. It occurs occasionally throughout our area from the Longdendale Trail (SK0598) and Birley Vale (SK3984) in the north, to Drakelow Power Station (SK21J) and Church Gresley (SK2919) in the south. It generally grows as scattered bushes but can form dense stands as at the old Friargate Station in Derby (SK3436) where it forms an important habitat for butterflies. It is much grown in gardens for ornament from where its seeds are readily dispersed by the wind. It is indigenous to China.
