Species Details

Moonwort is an occasional native perennial of unimproved grassland that is often found in the vicinity of old lead mine workings. It is virtually confined to the White Peak, Dark Peak and South West Peak Natural Areas [Priestcliffe Lees SK1472; Pindale SK1582; Coombs Dale SK2274; Beeley Moor SK2967]. There is only one recent record south of the White Peak at Woodlands Field near Allestree (SK3440). The plant was much used by herbalists in the past which probably explains why it was illustrated on a period canvas-work panel at Hardwick Hall (Mabey 1996).
