Species Details

Smith’s Brome is a very rare casual annual of unimproved hay meadows and waysides. All recent records are from floodplain haymeadows in the Hope/Hathersage area (Lower Hollins SK1385, Hope SK1683, Bradwell SK1781 & Hathersage SK2181). Previously it was recorded sporadically from throughout our area as far south as Ashbourne (SK14) in 1888, Soath Farm (SK2235) in 1975, and Derby (SK33) in 1968. It was probably introduced as a contaminant of grass-seed mixes though its origins are uncertain and currently under study.
