Species Details

Frog Orchid is a rare native perennial of pastures and rough grassland, generally on limestone. The majority of our records are from the White Peak [Grin Low SK0571, Priestcliffe Lees Reserve SK1472, Hartington Station Quarry SK1460, Middleton Moor SK2655, Hopton Quarry Reserve SK2656]. Elsewhere it is very rare in the northern half of the county, occurring at Mellor Moor (SJ9887), Crich Tramway Museum (SK3455) and Glapwell Reclamation Site (SK4667). Lintons 1903 Flora shows that it once occurred in southern Derbyshire [Calke SK32 Spondon Fields SK33/43, Stanton-by-Dale SK43]. This local loss was probably due to agricultural intensification. There is a single unconfirmed record for the hybrid of Fragrant Orchid (XxGymnadenia conopsea) and Frog Orchid (XxCoeloglossum viride) from Grin Wood, Buxton (SK054720) in 1969 (Patrick & Hollick, 1974).

This plant is in Category 2 of the local Red Data List, 2009.
