Species Details

Midland Hawthorn is a rare native spiny shrub or small tree of ancient woods. It is also sometimes planted in hedges probably by mistake for Hawthorn. It occurs scattered throughout our area from Mellor (SJ9888) and Upper Derwent (SK1293) in the north through High Tor (SK2958) to Alkmonton (SK1937 and Spondon (SK4136) in the south. Nationally it is a southern species with Derbyshire towards the north-western limit of its natural distribution and it is thus sometimes only regarded as native in the south of the county (Clapham 1969).
