Species Details

Wild Onion is a rare native perennial of cliff-ledges, walls, grassy places and rough ground generally on dry calcareous to neutral soils. The majority of recent records are from the White Peak as at Tansley Dale (SK1674), Monsal Dale (SK1871) and the Via Gellia (SK2857); with a few in the south-eastern corner of our county around Attenborough (SK5032). Previous records covered a wider area including Sudbury Hall grounds (SK1532) in 1977, and near Pleasley (SK4863) in 1979. Two varieties have been reported though there are no recent records of either of them. These are; variety Xxvineale with a distribution similar to the species; and variety Xxcompactum with a distribution less obviously restricted to the limestone areas.
